Khajanchi jewels palace is a family owned firm specialising in works of Indian and Mughal art whose foundations were laid in 1846 by Mr. Tej Karan khajanchi , who was the financier and money lender to the royal families of India. Currently managed and run by the fourth and fifth generations of the family, we deal in rare and exclusive jewellery and jewelled objects that come from the personal collections of princely and noble families, as well as we manufacture the same.
We are located just minutes away from the beautiful, historic ruins of Junagarh Fort, in Bikaner and are available by appointment for consultation and private viewings. We represent our clients with complete objectivity, while maintaining absolute confidentiality.
Late Sh. Motichand Khajanchi was born into a family of jewellers, whose patrons included the royal family of Bikaner. Following his father into the family business, Khajanchi travelled across the country and encountered diverse artistic traditions.
MARCH 14, 1925 - MARCH 14, 1979
Shri Khajanchi began collecting his fine arts beyond his family’s collection aged 15. The paintings he sought out, often buying them at locally held auctions, were also among the finest he collected. He spent heavily on them, often landing in trouble with his father in his early years, but also earned the friendship of artists and scholars who influenced him.
As Khajanchi’s collection grew, he was recognised as an authority on Rajasthani miniatures. He pored over old handwritten manuscripts that deepened his understanding of the literary and religious references in the paintings. A selection of important works from Khajanchi’s collection, curated by Krishnadasa and Karl Khandalavala, was exhibited at the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta in 1960, now published in form of a saffronart catalogue.
The family continues to maintain the finest of his collection at the Motichand Khajanchi Collection, Bikaner. Some artefacts have made their way to the National Museum, New Delhi, MET Museum New York, amongst other renowned collections internationally.
